“UNIX is a trademark of American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T Corporation). Mac OS is a trademark of Apple Computer, Inc.

You can get full use out of your Mac OS X computer by learning the ins and outs of the Unix operating system. Even though you may not know it, you use Unix every time you turn on your Mac OS X computer, because at the core, Mac OS X is Unix.

The original version of UNIX was created in the 1960s in the Bell Labs of AT&T, by researchers who devised A MULTI-USER OPERATING SYSTEM for large mainframe computers.

BSD Unix System

From AT&T, the Unix system spread to research universities, that quickly adopted it. The University of California, Berkeley, was one of the earliest adopters and developers of Unix. The staff and students at Berkeley added many more features to this ever-evolving operating system. The updated Berkeley version of Unix was known as Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD), and it forms a major branch of the operating system family tree. The BSD family tree must be an apple tree, because the most recent fruit is Mac OS X, which is based on the BSD Unix system from Berkeley.

The most famous open-source software is the free operating system known as Linux. A young, Finnish software developer named Linus Torvalds created Linux as a version of Unix that could run on Intel-style PCs, as well as other hardware. In addition to Linux, there are several free versions of BSD Unix, known as Free BSD, Open BSD, and Net BSD. Mac OS X is a cousin to these free BSD operating systems, BUT IS NOT ITSELF A FREE OPERATING SYSTEM.

The largest collection of open-source applications comes from the GNU project, developed by the Free Software Foundation. GNU is an acronym for GNU's Not Unix, and yes, that is self-referential. Many of the Unix applications that you run are based on GNU code.

Up to and including Mac OS 9, the Apple operating system was not based on Unix. There was no Unix code at the core of Mac OS 9 or earlier systems; instead, they used an operating system that was developed WITHIN APPLE COMPUTER.

Darwin

When it was time to create the next version of Mac OS, Apple chose to base it ON A BSD UNIX FOUNDATION, modified for the specific needs of Apple. This version of BSD UNIX WAS CALLED DARWIN. Darwin consists primarily of the Unix kernel, which is the program that runs and manages all the processes and shells of the operating system, along with associated programs and files that make the kernel run.

Not all the Mac OS X operating system is open source; for example, the programs used to create the Mac OS X desktop and windows, KNOWN COLLECTIVELY AS AQUA, are not available for free and are only distributed as compiled applications.

Aqua

Each time you run Mac OS X on your computer, you are using Aqua. Aqua is the graphical user interface system that gives your Macintosh the distinctive look and feel of Mac OS X.

About hidden files in macOS:

“You can use the -A option with the ls command to list hidden files. Computers do not always display all files to the user. They do not do this to deceive you, but rather to help reduce the visual clutter in file listings. Hidden files are usually special files, set apart from the files that Unix users create and update. They may be configuration files or files that establish your shell environment. However, there are times that you may need to see a listing of all of your files, both hidden and normal, while working with Unix.

Unix hides files by giving them a filename starting with a period (.). Most commands, including the ls command, ignore these files. You cannot see them in a normal file listing.

They also do not appear in the Mac OS X Finder.

You can copy a file and its resource fork using the ditto command. Mac OS X uses resource forks to store additional information about the file. A resource fork is a hidden file that accompanies another document. When you use Aqua applications, resource forks are created automatically but are kept invisible to both the Mac OS X Finder and the Unix shell.”

“The first was the introduction of Mac OS X. It was the first version of the Macintosh operating system to fully utilize BSD at its core.

The creation of Mac OS X really starts with the creation of UNIX. That story is well known, especially among Linux geeks—a group that owes a great debt of gratitude to the work of Dennis Ritchie, Ken Thompson, and a team of Bell Labs engineers. In the summer and early fall of 1969, these engineers cobbled together a rough operating system based on the Multiplexed Information and Computing Service (MULTICS) operating system. MULTICS was a project taken on jointly in 1966 by Bell, General Electric, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), but dropped in 1969.

Like so many technical projects, work on the UNIX system began with an informal discussion. These informal notes would become the working concept of operations for the initial version of UNIX.

Over four months following that meeting, work on the UNIX system rolled forward. A rough filesystem was created on the PDP-7, a system that, at its creation, was state of the art. The engineers, primarily Thompson, CREATED THE OPERATING SYSTEM, SHELL, ASSEMBLER, AND EDITOR IN JUST FOUR WEEKS.

They also developed a set of tools that would be accessible to users on the system, including tools to copy, print, and delete files. This core tool set was created with the General Electric Comprehensive Operating System (GECOS)—a system still in limited use on servers and mainframes today. The tools were then transferred to the PDP-7 using paper tape. With the assembler—the final piece of the original system—successfully transferred to the PDP-7, the fledgling UNIX system was no longer reliant on GECOS.

UNIX WAS COMPLETELY SELF-CONTAINED, with the full capabilities TO DEVELOP AND BUILD new tools for the system included as part of the system itself.”

THE REVOLUTION THAT IS UNIX.

“Macros and Pipes

Two more milestones in the development of UNIX were accomplished in the years between 1970 and 1975.

The first was, in essence, another modernization of an older computing idea— the concept of macros. Like data structures at the code level, macros contained a set of actions and operations that could be executed by users and developers.

The overriding idea was to GROUP THESE SETS OF TASKS TOGETHER in a series of operations initiated by a single keystroke.

Macros did not exist in the early iterations of the C language. Due to the growing complexity and power of that language, macros for it were more difficult to create, because that power and complexity demanded a similar level of power in macro-like operations. RITCHIE AND KERNIGHAN APPROACHED THIS PROBLEM HEAD ON, CREATING A CONCEPT THAT WOULD TRULY DISTINGUISH THE UNIX OPERATING SYSTEM FROM OTHERS OF ITS DAY AND FROM MOST THAT FOLLOWED.

RATHER THAN CREATING NEW CODE FOR MACROS, Ritchie and Kernighan envisioned a concept that would allow the output of one existing command or tool TO BE PASSED AS INPUT TO ANOTHER.

This concept efficiently leveraged the previous work of creating the individual system tools, eliminating duplicate effort.

MORE IMPORTANT, IT ALSO CREATED A SEEMINGLY INFINITE NUMBER OF TOOL COMBINATIONS.

ANY TOOL COULD PERFORM ITS DISCRETE OPERATIONS, AND THEN SEAMLESSLY PASS THE RESULT OF THOSE OPERATIONS AS INPUT TO ANY OTHER TOOL for further processing and output— perhaps to yet another tool, if necessary.

In effect, the concept created system “glue” capable of tying many tools to many others as required. Ritchie and Kernighan called this glue pipes.

IN PRACTICE, PIPES WERE REVOLUTIONARY.

PIPES GAVE USERS POWER AND FLEXIBILITY THAT SIMPLY COULD NOT BE ACHIEVED with mere macros.

They also had an interesting side effect on subsequent UNIX development: they narrowed the scope of NEW TOOLS TO SINGLE TASKS.

What would become the hallmark philosophy of UNIX systems was born in that reduced scope: “DO ONE THING, AND DO IT WELL.”

THE IMPLEMENTATION OF PIPES ALLOWED DEVELOPERS TO WRITE PROGRAMS THAT PERFORMED A SINGLE TASK WELL, and then to tie those applications, as necessary, to others created under the same philosophy.

At the highest level, the use of pipes encouraged developers to create system and user tools that worked well together.

In 1970, Wozniak became friendly with a summer intern at Wozniak’s employer, Silicon Valley stalwart Hewlett-Packard. The friend made an increasingly compelling case that a computer could be built and sold on a single circuit board; that such a computer could, in fact, be the basis of a company created specifically to sell computers to individuals, rather than to businesses. Though initially skeptical, Wozniak was eventually convinced that his friend, Stephen Jobs, might be onto something. After ending a brief college career of his own at Reed College in Portland, Oregon, Jobs returned to Palo Alto in 1974, taking a job as a technician at Atari. Jobs and Wozniak became regular attendees and contributors at the Homebrew meetings.

Jobs focused his attention on marketing, sales, and fund-raising.

Unlike the histories of UNIX and BSD, which were primarily technical achievements, the story of Apple Computer is equal parts technical wizardry AND MARKETING SAVVY.

It’s almost impossible to tell the story of one without telling the story of the other.

In 1983, Apple introduced the Lisa, and another new operating system. Lisa Office System (OS) implemented a set of process-management system calls that bore some resemblance to UNIX.

Additionally, the Lisa OS filesystem bore a striking resemblance to UNIX, albeit with a few additional Apple pieces.

But the most striking feature of the Lisa was a full graphical user interface (GUI), as inspired by efforts at Xerox’s PARC laboratory.

The Convergence: Mac OS X

Financially buoyed by his time at Apple, Jobs purchased Pixar, a visual effects studio, for $10 million in 1986, and then founded a new company, NeXT, Inc. NeXT would produce the NeXTStep operating system, a UNIX-like system, and the hardware on which it would run.

NeXTStep would eventually serve as one basis of the rebirth of Apple and the Macintosh. However, the convergence of the Macintosh and UNIX actually began in the early 1990s, with a version of AT&T UNIX known as Apple UNIX.

NeXTStep

NeXTStep was a direct descendent of 4.3BSD. Its distinction from BSD rested in its use of the Mach microkernel, originally designed as a drop-in UNIX kernel replacement.

Back at Apple

Following Jobs’s departure from Apple, the company went through a period in which it seemed, at once, overambitious and underachieving.”

“In 1997, Apple acquired NeXT for a staggering $429 million. The deal also included 1.5 million shares of Apple stock, all of which were awarded to Steve Jobs.

Apple had returned to its roots, bringing back its founder to head the company. In 2001, Jobs would remove the “interim” from his CEO title. The company had also found the operating system that would take it into the next century in NeXTStep. Over the next four years, NeXTStep would be ported to the PowerPC platform, while maintaining synchronous Intel builds.

Jobs introduced Mac OS X, with its internal BSD and Mach kernel, at the January 2000 Macworld conference in San Francisco, California.

Apple had created a twenty-first century operating system BY RETURNING TO TECHNOLOGIES BORN IN THE 1970S.”

History

UNIX and its various derivatives had been well known and highly regarded since the late 1970s. It was the operating system of choice for business, academia, and, since the early 1980s, government research programs. The large, active code base made it possible to customize a full operating system FOR ALMOST ANY NEED.

BSD also had a large and dedicated user base. Bugs in the system were fixed quickly. The code was under constant review and revision by the community.

That community, in fact, made sure that each new tool added to BSD underwent thorough TESTING UNDER THE UNIX PHILOSOPHY THAT IT SHOULD “WORK WELL WITH OTHER TOOLS.” That established process and history would potentially REDUCE THE DEVELOPMENT TIME FOR THE APPLE TEAM.

Open Source Base

The open source basis of Mac OS X was actually misrepresented in Steve Jobs’s hyperbolic announcement of the operating system at the 2000 Macworld conference in San Francisco.

Two pieces of that announcement in particular made more of those origins than was supported by reality:

– Calling Mac OS X “VERY LINUX LIKE”, Jobs noted that it uses “FreeBSD UNIX, which is the same as Linux.”

WHILE THERE ARE SIMILARITIES, there are also many differences between the two operating systems.

– Jobs also noted that Mac OS X “was completely open source.”

Again that's not exactly true. WHILE THE DARWIN CODE IS, IN FACT, OPEN SOURCE, many elements of Mac OS X are not.”

But Steve Jobs is a Marketing People, he is not There “to Tell you the truth”, But to Sell you “a Dream”.

“While the FreeBSD basis of Mac OS X moved the Macintosh into the modern age, IT IS NOT THE COMPLETELY FREE AND OPEN SOURCE operating system painted by Jobs’s Macworld announcement.

The decision to continue using open source tools in Mac OS X created, to paraphrase Torvalds, “enough eyeballs to keep the bugs shallow.” It allowed Apple to call upon a large pool of user-created tools.”

Based on BSD, NeXTStep WAS HIGHLY EXTENSIBLE.

The basis of NeXTStep was BSD’s native C. The power of C had already been proven and could be extended easily as the operating system grew to meet new demands.

The full set of UNIX USER-SPACE TOOLS available in FreeBSD is available in Mac OS X natively.

As already noted, the core of Mac OS X is based on FreeBSD and is a true UNIX. BSD, Linux, and Mac OS X are clearly branches straight from a single tap root: the UNIX OPERATING SYSTEM.

Let’s go back one more time to the origins of Mac OS X. It began its life as NeXTStep, which was a direct descendant of OpenBSD—UNIX through and through.

The core implementation of BSD in Mac OS X is Darwin.

Mac OS X is compatible with the Single UNIX Specification Version 3, is certified UNIX 03–compliant, and is fully POSIX-compliant.

The systems share A COMMON ANCESTOR, after all, in UNIX. BSD is UNIX. Mac OS X is based on BSD, although it also contains quite a bit of proprietary code.

You’ll recall that BSD is a direct fork of UNIX, created by students at UCB. That fork took shape beginning in the late 1970s, with BSD development proceeding in a path parallel to that of UNIX. As BSD development continued through version 4.2, UNIX development moved into System V (SysV).”

The hardest thing is to make understand that everything that happens is only an intellectual rumination. So there is no awakening, or the awakening is to understand 'precisely that'.

If you question the entire majority of people, they will tell you that there is “them and this body”, “this body and this spirit”, “this spirit and them”, but few will tell you that this duality does not exist. Few will tell you that this duality is them talking to themselves.

This is probably what differentiates us from the rest of the living world.

Or at least in the intensity of the inner questioning.

This is our strength but it is also our downfall. Our downfall because we are too caught up in the world of ideas.

Ideas are useful but as the rule of the trinity says:

• an idea must be born;

• an idea must live,

• an idea must die.

And the problem is that we are, as a biological species, very good at inventing new ideas, at making them live, but we have a hard time getting rid of old ideas. Because of dopamine and the need for seeking.

And the rest of the biological world does not have this existential problem.

That is why the pagan world (of antiquity and before) was superior to the democratic mode. Because it was closer to nature.

It considered itself as a member of nature ('the universe').

Modernism (monotheism) has affirmed egocentrism 'as a rule'. Destroying this PRINCIPLE OF UNIVERSALITY in the sense of having its own place not being outside of it.

Monotheistic egocentrism opposes man to his environment.

This is how we systematically destroy 'all our ecosystems'.

And this is not going to get any better, the more we go into modernity, the more we will become alienated with our environment to a point where there will be no way back.

Unless there is a Miracle of evolution of nature, the Human Species HAS NO CHANCE TO SURVIVE.

• that is to say, several months/years.

Historically, it is always the MYSTICS WHO VENTURE into these unfamiliar lands. And so it is they who advance the Human Society, creating religious traditions, which unfortunately become religions (institutions). These same institutions “end up doing the OPPOSITE OF THE WORK OF MYSTICAL INSPIRATION”; that is, imposing an exoteric tradition:

“them and the body”;

“this body and this spirit”;

“this spirit and them”.

Exoterism (religions as institutions) is the -NEGATION OF THE ESOTERIC WORK- AND THEREFORE the -NEGATION OF THE HUMAN-.

THE SAME NEGATION THAT ENDS UP IN COMMUNISM OR NAZISM.

If you say I am not this body, but I am the mind, then you are producing the same pattern.

Identification is the key to understand awakening.

So this state of non-duality that spiritual philosophers have talked so much about is something THAT WE ARE VERY FAMILIAR WITH IN OUR EVERYDAY EXPERIENCE.

Now a lot of philosophers think that because it is spontaneous it is not structured. NOW THAT IS NOT TRUE.

People have always thought that when you reach the absolute then that is the end. Actually the absolute is only the BEGINNING.”

If you have been identified all your life with your past; saying I did this, I became this, etc., then you really never progress.

Because this set of memories that you call “your life” will not bring 'you anything new'. You will repeat the same processes, like the hamster in its wheel.

Breaking that identification is the important thing; IT LEAVES YOU NAKED, yes of course, but free. And you will really start to progress, and not repeat anymore from that point.

Supposing we are arguing about which team plays better at hockey, you may say Holland I may say Germany. We may understand what the other is saying so we have transcendental identity as a condition for the argument, but HE HAS HIS POINT OF VIEW AND I HAVE MY POINT OF VIEW.

The last point to appreciate is that non-duality does not mean that you stop fighting. The best warrior has total identity with the enemy, completely understands the enemy. I know as a philosopher, we could go (as Lakshmi was suggesting) into my battles at school and so on—but I know as a philosopher that I cannot really critique a false and mystified system of beliefs until I totally absorb it, AM TOTALLY AT ONE WITH IT.

So the best general is the one who has done his reconnaissance, THE ONE WHO COMPLETELY UNDERSTANDS HIS ENEMY, HE IS TOTALLY AT ONE WITH HIS ENEMY.

We become one with the other, not in order necessarily to agree with the other or to be the other permanently; BUT IN ORDER TO ELIMINATE THE OTHER. So we have to understand what are the blocks, the constraints, the checks on our own emancipation, what are the blocks, the constraints, the checks on the emancipation of all people, all beings everywhere. WE HAVE TO BECOME ONE WITH THEM.

We have to totally understand them to eliminate them, that is these blocks, constraints, forces. This means that the spiritual BEING IS ALSO A WARRIOR, BUT HE IS A WARRIOR AT PEACE WITH HIMSELF.

All this movement initiated in the last 300 years or so, FROM THE ENLIGHTENMENT TO COLLECTIVISM, is a single unitary movement, and will annihilate the human AS A SPECIES.

I differ from James Morgan Pryse in his interpretation of the third degree, PURE REASONING. He classifies reasoning with the fourth, which is that apprehension of reality without cognition.

I don't understand why he doesn't make the distinction, he probably didn't understand it.

Other Words more tinged with conceptualization (that is duality) have also been used:

• liberating knowledge;

• jnana, gyāna, gyan, ginans, gnosis, ma'rifa, ma‘rifah, etc.;

• 'intuitional' mind.

Those who had 'this knowledge' 'were called':

• perfect ones;

• stars;

• gnostics;

• jnanis.

• and so on.

YET THESE APPROACHES ARE IMMENSELY POPULAR.

THEY ALWAYS SPEAK TO A PERSON ABOUT SPECIAL STATES IN TIME.

And the bottom line, however ‘non-dual’ the position being offered may sound, is that ‘you are not quite there yet’.

SO THERE ARE MORE ATTAINMENTS, MORE WORK, MORE PROGRESS, MORE LEVELS, MORE STAGES OR WHAT HAVE YOU.

AND THERE IS ALWAYS THE ‘ENLIGHTENED’ TEACHER AND SELECTED ‘STUDENTS’ WHO ARE RUMORED TO HAVE ‘IT’.

OF COURSE THIS IS ALL THE HEIGHT OF NONSENSE AND COMPLETELY OUT OF SYNC WITH THE BASIC POINT OF ALL THIS.

It is not that you will become that; you are that. THAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PATHS OF BECOMING, such as are offered in many popular approaches, AND THE DIRECT POINTING TO WHAT YOU ARE.

You say all the spiritual pointers are concepts.

Most people looking into non-duality tend TO MISS THIS KEY POINT.

BEING OR NON-CONCEPTUAL AWARENESS [...] CAN NEVER BE AN EXPERIENCE. That is the beauty of it. The word is not it.

YOU CANNOT EXPERIENCE BEING, BECAUSE YOU ARE THAT. It is not two. THUS NON-DUALITY.

The basic point of non-duality is that here and now, you are that (reality itself).

That is what allows the ‘full stop’ and the direct recognition that there is NOTHING WRONG, NOW OR EVER.”

John: Most social reforms fail on this point, because they do not offer genuine freedom but only modified ideologies (conceptual systems). Real non-duality sets us free from all dualistic concepts and hence delivers us to lasting freedom, not merely social reforms.”

To recap, most groups recruit new members by offering something (perhaps bending the truth a bit) and provide some form of indoctrination (“training”) AFTER A RECRUIT SIGNS UP.

Excessive loyalty is embodied in the slogan, “My country, right or wrong!” Good Americans should stand up for America no matter what, right? Yet we look at Germany during World War II and wonder why its citizens didn’t turn against their government. Weren’t they demonstrating loyalty by standing behind their country, right or wrong, thus being “good Germans”? And if they had turned away, wouldn’t they have been guilty of treason? Obsessive nationalism, loyalty to one’s country no matter what, has long been a sad human weakness. When Hitler came to power in Germany, loyalty was carried to another level.

Members are expected to publicly proclaim their belief in their leader, sometimes including the notion that he or she is God, Messiah, or the rebirth of Christ.

Members of Jim Jones’ People’s Temple were required to show absolute loyalty by reporting negative comments uttered by anyone. If someone heard something negative and failed to report it, that failure was a punishable offense, including for children who failed to rat out their parents (shades of the Hitler Youth).”

Asking about God is a silly question.

Asking stupid questions is the way this brain works. It has the unfortunate tendency to START asking itself meaningless questions.

THE BRAIN'S GOAL IS NOT TO FIND MEANING, VALIDITY. That's why the Brain wanders FROM INTELLECTUAL MASTURBATION TO INTELLECTUAL MASTURBATION.

Josephus's second reference to Jesus appears in Jewish Antiquities 20.200, where he is dealing with the struggles for power that characterized life in Judea prior to the revolt of 66 CE.”

“Josephus also described the various voluntary groups within Judaism at the turn of the eras, including not only the Pharisees and Sadducees—who are mentioned in the New Testament—but also a group called the Essenes. The latter believed that God was directly active in human life.

As noted above, they were convinced that the incumbent priests were corrupt, that the temple was not where God dwelt among his people, and that their group must call their contemporaries to proper worship of God and prepare them for the coming new age in which the purified covenant people and the true temple would be established.

These Dead Sea documents foster an apocalyptic view of this new Jewish community, which claimed to be the true covenant people and perceived the collaboration of the Jewish leadership with the Hellenistic rulers (and later, with the Romans) as evidence of corruption and actions contrary to God's purpose for his true people. Christians 'DO NOT REALIZE HOW' MUCH THEY ARE JEWS.

They carry the 'SOUL OF JUDAISM'.

They can't STAND BEING TOLD THAT, because they are 'proud to be Christians', but if there is no Judaism, there is no Christianism.

“The claimed disclosure of the divine purpose to this chosen community.

On entering the communitythey were to take an oath to obey every commandment of Moses “in accord with all that has been revealed to the Sons of Zadok, the Keepers of the Covenant and the Seekers of his Will”: the leaders of the Dead Sea community. The War Rule (1QM) describes the eschatological conflict with the powers of evil—Light against Darkness—which will lead to the defeat of these evil forces and the vindication of the People of God.

The agent through whom this triumph will come is “a star out of Jacob” (Num 24:17-19).

The Midrash on the Last Days (4Q174) announced the coming of two Messiahs: the Branch of David, and the Interpreter of the Law. In the Qumran document 11Q, Melchizdek (building on Gen 14:17-20) is portrayed as the head of the “sons of heaven,” who serves as God's agent of justice—a role that will continue until thefinal eschatological judgment and the defeat of Satan, the Prince of Darkness.

It is expected that this leader will denounce those who rebel against God and that he will announce the coming of peace and of the “anointed prince” and comfort those who mourn.

Clearly the aims of this Jewish movement as reflected in the Dead Sea Scrolls—to redefine the covenant community and to identify the messianic agents through whom the definition and the actualization will occur—were shared by the early Christians.

The resolution of these issues by the early Christians, however, was radically different from that of the Qumran community.”

“Notwithstanding the problems posed by the Passion chronology, the presence of implicit lunar calendar data (14 or 15 Nisan) along with a clearly attested weekday (Friday) in the four Gospels.

Since the calendar at that time was based on the sighting of the new moon crescent.

Moreover, astronomical calculations can only show that the moon was visible on a particular day, but never whether there was an actual sighting (which could be prevented by adverse atmospheric conditions), let alone if the Jewish authorities at the time really deemed it fit to ‘sanctify’ the new moon for this exact day.

In addition, 3 April, AD 33, was the date of a partial lunar eclipse that may have been visible over Jerusalem during the evening of the crucifixion.

It is conceivable that the memory of this phenomenon influenced certain passages in the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles, which record a “darkness” during the crucifixion (Matthew 27:45; Mark 15:33; Luke 23:44–45) and a “moon turning to blood” (Acts 2:20).

Implicit in the latter is a powerful typological image, according to which Christ, as the sacrificial Lamb of God, was slain on the same day as the Passover lamb.

This notion is already present in the Pauline epistles (1 Corinthians 5:7), where Jesus is directly identified with the Passover lamb.

It also helps explaining why, during the first three centuries of Christian literature, the day of Christ’s crucifixion was commonly associated with 14 Nisan, the day of preparation for Passover.

FROM THE SECOND CENTURY ONWARDS, however, Christian communities in ROME AND ELSEWHERE began to put greater emphasis on the weekday of the resurrection, making it binding practice to celebrate Easter on the SUNDAY that followed the Jewish Passover.

While this step helped TO EMANCIPATE THE CHRISTIAN PASCH from its JEWISH PREDECESSOR, the fact remained that 14 Nisan was a full moon date in the Jewish calendar.

FOR CHRISTIANS WHO HAD CONVERTED FROM PAGANISM, THIS CREATED SOMETHING OF A PROBLEM.

Ever since the Julian reform of 46/45 BC, the Roman calendar, which was used by most subjects of the empire in everyday affairs, had been PURELY SOLAR, with an average year length of 365.25d.”

“It was thus only natural if the Julian calendar became the framework for the emerging Christian liturgical year, with the birth of Jesus ending up on 25 December, THE TRADITIONAL ROMAN DATE OF THE WINTER SOLSTICE.

Yet the question remained how Easter, as a date tied to the moon, could be accommodated within this framework.

In this context, it is striking to observe that some Christian communities reacted to the problem by redefining 14 Nisan as the 14th day of the first month in their local SOLAR CALENDAR, thereby divorcing the remembrance of the crucifixion from the full moon.

The fifth-century church historian Sozomen reports that the Montanist sect of Asia Minor used to set Easter on April 6 or the Sunday thereafter, following a solar calendar whose first month of spring began on 24 March, while from Epiphanius of Salamis we learn that certain groups from the same region always celebrated the Pasch on 25 March.

For all others, who wanted to retain the LUNAR NATURE of 14/15 Nisan, it was necessary to keep track of the JEWISH PASSOVER.

As long as the lunar months were determined empirically, it was impossible to foretell with any certainty the date of Passover, FORCING CHRISTIANS TO AWAIT THE RESPECTIVE DECISIONS OF THE JEWS.

This ongoing dependency of Christian liturgy upon JEWISH CALENDATION must have been a continuing source of UNEASE FOR THE YOUNG CHURCH, especially in times and places where CHRISTIANS WERE EAGER TO EMANCIPATE THEMSELVES FROM THE SYNAGOGUE.

Given such circumstances it was difficult, if not impossible, for the church to retain its desired goal of UNITY by celebrating Easter on the SAME DATE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.

It is thus no surprise if Christians, from the early third century onwards, were no longer prepared to “walk in blindness and stupidity behind the Jews,” as it was put by the anonymous North African author of the De pascha computus (243), the earliest preserved treatise on Easter reckoning.

This outspokenWILL TO EMANCIPATION gave rise to the development of lunisolar cycles, adapted for the Julian calendar and specially designed for the calculation of the moveable feast days.

While several varieties of such cycles were proposed during late antiquity, they were all based ON THE SAME INSIGHT that, after a given number of years, the Easter full moon was bound to return to the same Julian calendar date as in some previous year.

The interval between two such years comprises both a whole number of Julian years (365.25d) and a whole number of lunar months (29.5306d).

The ratio between both periods has to come as close as possible to the decimal fraction contained in the excess of twelve lunar months compared with a Julian year, which is 0.3685 (365.25 ÷ 29.5306 = 12.3685). The latter can be approximated using the following common fractions: 3/8 (0.3750); 4/11 (0.3636); 7/19 (0.3684); 31/84 (0.3690).

As can be seen from these values, the most exacting approach will be to intercalate seven lunar months in every 19 years, i.e. to equate 19 Julian years or 6939.75d with 12 × 19 + 7 = 235 lunations. Moreover, since 235 lunar months are one day in excess (12 lunar years of 354d + 7 embolismic months of 30d + 4.75 Julian leap days = 6940.75d) over 19 solar years, one lunar day will have to be dropped at the end of each 19-year cycle.

To medieval computists, this mechanism was known AS THE ‘LEAP OF THE MOON’ OR SALTUS LUNAE.

While the 19-year cycle or enneacaidecaëteris was by far the best possible approximation to astronomical reality within reasonable length and eventually emerged as the sole standard of Easter reckoning in East and West, alternative cycles, based on luni-solar ratios of 3/8 (octaëteris) and 31/84 (Supputatio Romana), were also in use during late antiquity and sometimes competed with the 19-year cycle, which was championed by the Alexandrian church since the late third century.

Given the many different flavors of lunisolar calendation, it is easy to overlook that the chief purpose of these devices was to calculate a Jewish date—the 14th of Nisan, which in Christian usage BECAME REFERRED TO AS THE ‘EASTER FULL MOON’.

At first glance, it would seem that Easter cycles did not fulfill this objective very successfully. Since the Jewish calendar of the Mishnah followed empirical criteria, the Christian Easter full moon was bound to deviate from 14 Nisan, as it was observed by the Jews, in many years.

Christian writers from the fourth century onwards are often found polemicizing against the calendar of contemporary Jewry.

A prominent early example for this stance is a lost tractate On Easter by Peter, the patriarch of Alexandria from ca. 300–310, which is fragmentarily preserved in the seventh-century Chronicon Paschale. Peter accused the Jews of regularly celebrating their Paschone month too early, which in his mind was a violation of the rules once established by Moses.

As he saw it, the Jewish calendar had changed for the worse after the destruction of the Second Temple, whereas his church still preserved the legitimate reckoning, which had been observed at the time of Jesus.

The discrepancies, which Peter and other authors are found complaining about, seem to have mainly arisen from the ‘rule of the equinox’, which was an element characteristic of Alexandrian (and later Western) Easter reckoning.

According to this rule, the Easter full moon cannot fall earlier than 21 March, the supposed date of the vernal equinox.

If the Jews disregarded this rule in Peter’s time, they were bound to celebrate Easter a month earlier on many occasions.

Sacha Stern has recently confirmed this picture by showing that before the destruction of the Second Temple, the Jewish Passovers tended to fall in April rather than March, presumably in order to give pilgrims enough time to reach Jerusalem.

By contrast, the available evidence for the fourth century points towards Passovers’ being celebrated in March and hence often ahead of the equinox.

As a result, those Christians who insisted on following the Jews instead of observing the Alexandrian rules would in many cases have celebrated on a different date than the mainstream church.

Their practice was condemned at the Council of Nicaea (325), as can be inferred from a letter sent by Constantine the Great to Syrian and Palestinian bishops, but apparently lingered on in parts of the East, as can be seen from the fact that John Chrysostom and an anonymous Anatolian homilist still felt the need to inveigh against dissenters in their own communities as late as 387.

Christian writers in the Latin West, by contrast, had little exposure to these kinds of polemics, which mostly stem from the Greek East.

A general lack of available sources on the Jewish calendar other than the Old Testament soon led to a situation where early medieval scholars ceased to differentiate between the biblical calendar of the Hebrews and the calendar of the Jews that they may or may not have encountered in their own time. Instead, they went on to by and large identify Jewish lunar months with the lunations of the Alexandrian 19-year cycle, sometimes following an assumption that this cycle had already been revealed to Moses at Mt. Sinai.

The construction of new Easter cycles virtually ceased after the mid-fifth century, although debates over the acceptance of particular cycles continued well into the early medieval period, especially on the British Isles, where the Celtic churches long upheld specific computational traditions that separated them from Rome.

This apparent halt in technical development, however, did not lead to the kind of intellectual stagnation one might expect. Hundreds of surviving manuscripts from the seventh to the tenth century testify to the importance of the computus—the reckoning of Easter—to scientific learning and monastic education in this period, making it clear “that almost everyperson educated in a monastic school was taught at the least the basics of this science.”

Authorities such as Dionysius Exiguus, whose 95-year Easter table became the basis for most of subsequent medieval computistics, had provided the necessary information for finding the date of Easter, but they generally remained silent on points such as the exact position of the embolismic months in the Julian calendar, the date of the ‘leap of the moon’ or the exact sequence of ‘full’ and ‘hollow’ months in the lunar year.

This early medieval tradition of computistical textbooks reached its acme with De temporum ratione, written by the Northumbrian monk Bede the Venerable in 725, who became the foremost authority for Western computistics and Christian chronology until the Gregorian reform of the calendar in 1582.”

If you calculate from the beginning of this Christian era, there are NO MORE than 70 generations of men.

THE GENERAL POPULATION IS INTOXICATED from birth WITH THE IDEA that they are free to make their own choices and actions; but this is far from the truth.

The need to have a family, beyond to have an offspring is not even a biological need because the biological need appears WITH THE APPEARANCE OF THE STIMULUS.

To be clearer, you will not have A SEXUAL NEED UNTIL THE SEXUAL STIMULI APPEAR.

For example, someone living in isolation from civilization WOULD HAVE NO NEED TO “PROCREATE”.

THE NEED FOR A FAMILY 'IS A SOCIAL NEED'. That is to say that the Society incites 'as normality', and I say NORMALITY, TO HAVE A FAMILY.

IN BIOLOGICAL REALITY, if you are not sexually stimulated, THIS NEED WILL NOT APPEAR.

I am not saying that having children is neither good nor bad. I am just saying that it is not an 'INNATE PHYSIOLOGICAL' NEED, 'BUT A NEED STIMULATED' by the appearance 'of a sexual stimulus'.

Wanting to change a dead society is only useful IF YOU OVERCOME 'THAT DEAD SOCIETY'.

OVERCOME 'IS THE KEY'.

THE EQUALITY OF HUMAN BEINGS is therefore the TRAP SET BY MEDIOCRE PEOPLE to the elite, but to be really 'the elite', then it is also necessary TO GO 'BEYOND THE PLEBS', 'BEYOND THE MEDIOCRITY'.
