Heroes: Bowie. Losers.

“The 1970s were the era of defeat. As the 60s were extremely intense in terms of political and social change, from the early 70s the FLUX WENT STEADY. David Bowie, who debuted in the late 60s, marked this change when he invented Ziggy Stardust in 1972: no more real heroes, from now on the most desirable thing was to be fabricated. What is genuine, authentic, is boring. The only hero that really matters, is pure artifice, cut out from the comic books, movies and dressed in everything that’s glamorous. ‘All the Young Dudes’, a song he wrote for Mott the Hoople in ’72, reeks of the youth’s disappointment and disillusionment, forming A KIND OF “SOLIDARITY OF THE LOSERS” ANTHEM.

Bowie, always too erratic to make any firm political commitment, was rather in love with various dubious figures, “cracked actors”, (the inspiration for Ziggy was a forgotten singer who was believed to be a combination of god and an alien), necromantics like Aleister Crowley, Kenneth Anger’s satanism, Fascist dictators.

He was, nevertheless, obsessed with certain elements of modernity.”

“He was driven to German culture, especially the Weimar period, expressionism, Neue Sachlichkeit, theatre, Brecht. His first break-through hit concerned a man lost in space, after all, and the space age gets a strongly melancholic treatment from Bowie, as his character Major Tom is rather terrified by the silence of space.

Another obsession, as we will see, was Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four.

Bowie’s fixation with ‘totalitarianism’ applied to both sides. If you look at any footage of the West Berlin in 70s, you see a murky city, gravitating around the Wall. Living next to a prison, even if theoretically you’re not the prisoner, you can develop symptoms of suffocation. Knowing people can be killed over an illegal crossing of the Wall, not being able to walk all of your city, imagining what there can be on the other side.

Rainer Werner Fassbinder felt shame for the post-war West Germans, for the way the West stuffed their mouths with consumerism and told them to shut up.

One of the reasons the punk generation reads dystopias like Nineteen-Eighty-Four and A Clockwork Orange as if they were their lives, and looks longingly towards the communist East in their aesthetics, is their depoliticization. The generation of their grandparents was the one who survived the war, believed in socialism, was changing the world, joined political parties. Earlier, to piss off your parents, you’d join a Communist Party.

By the 70s, those who wanted to change the world were discredited and all they had left was the aesthetics.

A generation or two before, people believed in the modernist ideal for living: built estates for collective life, in which neighbors were to meet in the patio and socialize.”

All this architecture 'has aged horribly', and shows 'that it was a false doctrine'; the freedom of the individual passes through 'the total individuation' of the individual: his liberation; 'mythologized' by the resurrection; Long, painful 'but only capable of realizing the detachment from the matter'.

And it is the easterners who shoot, who perpetrate the terror, it’s true: it was the choice of the DDR government to erect the Wall, as between the establishing of the republic in 1948 and 1961 their population was growingly defecting to the West. This was the ideological failure of the East, who had to lock their citizens to convince them they live in the best of the worlds.

The measurement of the body, of its possibilities, was at the start of the technological revolution, and organization. It was a dark echo of the Golem, puppets, Karel Capek’s robots, and Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, the real source of post-punk imagery, although of deeply dubious politics. Punks, a lost generation betrayed by history, were obsessed with it, despite claiming a lack of any interest in the past. Their obsession was a fantasy within the late capitalist, increasingly post-Fordist society, where efficiency was already beginning to be replaced with dubious financial capital.

The mechanized organism was a Fordist obsession, and found its sickly, glam repetition in Klaus Nomi, a Bavarian former pastry maker, who discovered an operatic countertenor in himself. In the famous Saturday Nigh Live performance with Bowie in 1979, they channel the German avant-garde, dressed in Sonia Delaunay-inspired bombastic dada-suits, with exaggerated inflatable arms and legs, Bowie using also a puppet and a communist China blue suit with a Mao-Collar, but equipped with a skirt.

With the political crisis approaching, the post-boom generation, as if feeling that history was going to strike back again, took on the task of performing painful historical exorcisms on themselves. They lived as if it was the 20s, 30s, 50s or 60s, and yet they lived inevitably in the present.

It was Bowie who put the elements together. Bowie, a model postmodernist, someone who built his life and art out of the artificial, who went though pop art, comic books and Brecht, needed the necessary frisson of the real, which he found in Berlin, Warszawa and Moscow.

As we saw, he was the wall against which Christiane F. and her drugged, prostituting young friends were projecting their saccharine dreams that never came true. Berlin was, like any other big post war metropolis raised from ashes, a scene of “modernity’s failure”, with the decaying tower block estates, like Gropiusstadt, which for Christiane is in turn everything SHE FEARS AND HATES.

It was the conservative Catholic modernist Anthony Burgess whose terrifying vision of modish city oiks turned Soviet was the one which kept stirring generations of youth and became a foundational text for the glam and punk generation. A Clockwork Orange, of which we speak, had its roots in a trip Burgess took to Russia in the 50s, when he got beaten by Western-dressed smart looking young delinquents in Leningrad.”

It is funny to see that these barbarities that are the states had to create idols, materialized forms of the heroes.

This shows how low man has fallen into matter.

“Campbell discovered that the archetypal journey of the hero has three phases to it regardless of who the heroine or hero is, mythic or real.

Campbell summarizes the sequence of the hero’s journey in three phases: leaving, initiation, and return.

First, the journey demands that the hero leaves ordinary life in society — sometimes it’s by choice; sometimes it’s by circumstances or accidents that force them out of society and onto their quest. The hero or heroine is one who picks up the quest and is carried forward by transpersonal, archetypal, or mystical forces that are constellated by the quest. They summon what they can internally and externally to meet the demands of the quest, which, by its very nature, will require more than they will ever be able to gather alone. Secondly, the hero or heroine goes on a mythic journey during which they encounter supernatural forces or extraordinary situations that demand extraordinary responses from them and assistance from beyond the ordinary mind and everyday reality (may the force be with you!). In the process of meeting these demands, overcoming obstacles, persevering, discovering hidden supports, and so forth, they develop profound skills or strength, profound awareness, an open heart, deep compassion, or some other qualities. In this way they are initiated into a higher mode of being and functioning. As they reach the end of that segment of the hero’s quest, after having been through the ordeal and initiation, they take possession of something of great value. It may be that they found it in some remote place or, in the archetype of the spiritual quest, it is found within.

Lastly, the hero returns to their group or nation or humanity with the extraordinary prize to share it for the benefit of others. Campbell’s book Hero with a Thousand Faces brilliantly discusses many examples of this archetypal journey.

Campbell summarizes the sequence of the hero’s journey in three phases: leaving, initiation, and return. This sequence is repeated over and over again in countless myths. Joseph Campbell was a consultant on the original Star Wars trilogy.

Luke Skywalker and what he went through depicted the myth of the hero’s journey, as well as was his father’s journey to the dark side and back.

We see the hero’s myth in what Frodo went through in The Lord of the Rings as well, and the list of movies and stories focusing on the hero’s journey goes on and on: Moses and the Ten Commandments, The Lion King, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Golden Compass, The Matrix trilogy, the Harry Potter series, Avatar, and many others.

The mythic journey is perennially engaging for people because it offers the deep wisdom necessary for understanding the profound meaning of a purpose-driven life. The higher the purpose, the greater the meaning, but also the greater the challenges and sacrifices demanded.”

The movie ends with a classic return motif, the ritual presentation of medals of honor, a physical manifestation of recognition of victory. Interestingly enough, the final scene is one of glory within the group, unusual in a Hero’s Journey, and perhaps tied to the humor and heist trope component of these movies.”

It doesn't take more than 'five to ten years' to awaken; from the moment 'you have two people who have one will.

You don't have that anymore in the West, that's why; there is no way to awaken 'anybody in the West'.

“Two mistakes I find common among spiritual persons. One is that they ordinarily measure their devotion by the CONSOLATIONS AND SATISFACTIONS [PLEASURES] which they experience in the way of God, so that if these happen to be wanting, they think they have lost all devotion.

No, this is no more than a sensible devotion. True and substantial devotion does not consist in these things, but in having a will resolute, active, ready, and CONSTANT NOT TO OFFEND God, AND TO PERFORM ALL THAT BELONGS TO HIS SERVICE.

The other mistake is that if it ever happens to them to do anything WITH REPUGNANCE AND WEARINESS, THEY BELIEVE THEY HAVE NO MERIT IN IT.”

THE GOAL IS TO LIMIT ONE'S PLEASURES AND TO RENOUNCE THEM; MORTIFICATION IS THAT.

The goal is to avoid the 'DOPAMINE MECHANISM' in the brain' that consumes this body; more pleasures lead to more desires for pleasures, like an addict.

The goal is to regularly cut out these daily pleasures, until —YOU NO LONGER NEED THEM—.

Because you have understood that they 'enslave you', and you have understood the pleasures mechanism.

Gradually this biology will become 'more resistant' to outside solicitations until totally 'cut the outside'; and awakening is about that; the control of your biology.

St. Jerome:

“The measure of our advancement in the spiritual life should be taken from the progress we make IN THE VIRTUE OF MORTIFICATION; for it should be held as certain that THE GREATER VIOLENCE we shall do ourselves in mortification, THE GREATER ADVANCE WE SHALL MAKE IN PERFECTION.”

“When St. Francis Borgia heard it said that anyone was a saint, he used to answer, “He is, if he is mortified.”

When a young monk once asked an aged saint why, among so many who aim at perfection, SO FEW ARE FOUND PERFECT, he replied,

“BECAUSE IN ORDER TO BE PERFECT IT IS NECESSARY TO DIE wholly to one’s own inclinations, AND THERE ARE FEW WHO ARRIVE AT THIS.””

Hence the IMAGE OF DEATH and Resurrection, in 'all Esoteric traditions'.

St. Francis de Sales:

“IT SHOULD BE OUR PRINCIPAL BUSINESS TO CONQUER OURSELVES, and, from day to day, to go on increasing in strength and PERFECTION.

Above all, however, it is necessary for us to strive TO CONQUER OUR LITTLE TEMPTATIONS, such as fits of anger, suspicions, jealousies, envy, deceitfulness, vanity, attachments, and evil thoughts.

This Saint had, by long habit, so mortified his sense of taste that he never gave a sign of being pleased with anything, but took INDIFFERENTLY ALL THAT WAS GIVEN HIM.”

AND THIS IS WHERE THE ERROR I QUOTED 'ABOVE LIES'; – That is to say that you replace a pleasure by a pleasure; the pleasure of dissatisfaction 'IS ALSO A PLEASURE'; that is to say that 'the dopaminic mechanism' is identical.

And many religious people, also among those 'considered saints' have fallen 'into this trap of the mind'.

The aim is to break the mind, replacing one pleasure by another DOES NOT SOLVE ANYTHING.

You see tons of examples in christian literature, having made this mistake, of Replacing one 'pleasure by another'. Here are some examples:

“The Empress Leonora was remarkable for this virtue. Her usual dinner was of herbs, pulse, and other food of the poor, always the same both in kind and quantity.

St. Elizabeth, Queen of Portugal, fasted on bread and water about half the year.

The blessed Jacopone, having one day a desire for meat, bought a piece. He hung it up in his room and kept it until it was spoiled; then he had it cooked and ate it with unspeakable disgust.

St. Isidore suffered [...] so excessively that he could not go to the table without tears, and the command of his Superior was needed to force him to take some nourishment.

St. Catherine of Genoa practiced this. She loved to submit her preference to that of others, in all things.”

ALL THIS IS USELESS, ON THE CONTRARY you promote the opposite; REINFORCING THE EGO.

Personally, to tell you what to do; I DON'T PAY ATTENTION 'TO WHAT I EAT';

With time you will see 'that you do not pay attention to what you eat' and all those little everyday acts.

first, that he might suffer something each day;

second, that he might not die as a superior in his Carmelite Order;

Then in summing up his conclusions from the advocated approach of St. John of the Cross, Eliot returns in the last three lines of Section III to Heraclitus, ‘The Dark’ – THE UNITY OF OPPOSITION, THE HARMONY OF STRIFE:

“And what you do not know IS THE ONLY THING YOU KNOW

And what you own is WHAT YOU DO NOT OWN

And where you are is WHERE YOU ARE NOT.”

Thérèse made such a choice in the extreme during the last year of her life when SHE FREELY CHOSE TO WORK WITH SR. MARIE OF ST. JOSEPH.”

IT IS THE WILL —THAT MUST BE MASTERED—. We often talk about the mind, but mental activity is not autonomous, the 'will' is. If you can master your will, then the mental activity is only WHAT FOLLOWS. The brain is really ONLY A REACTOR, it is not AN AUTONOMOUS ORGAN.

“These things you ought to have done, and not to leave those undone.” (Matt. 23:23).

On this account the Apostle said: “I chastise my body AND BRING IT INTO SUBJECTION.” (1 Cor. 9:27)

If the body IS NOT MORTIFIED, it is very difficult to make it obedient to the law of God.

WE OURSELVES OUR WORST ENEMY.

BUT BY MORTIFICATION WE MAY ATTAIN GREAT GLORY IN HEAVEN.

“If contestants,” says St. Paul, “abstain from everything that might WEAKEN THE BODY and prevent them from winning a perishable crown, with what greater zeal ought not we to mortify ourselves in order to obtain a priceless AND ETERNAL CROWN!””

Not all blockchain services have the same support model, but many include their operating costs by taking a 'small portion' of the transaction. Technically “it's not free” except that when you come to these fees, you realize how Ridiculous they are.

The blockchain being in principle only an interface even if it can contain parameters similar to a classical intermediary (like personnel to pay, social charges, et cetera). All these intermediaries have huge fixed costs Compared to a “Purely technological platform”.

Blockchain technology was created to help ensure that doesn't happen or in the very least make it more challenging to try.

For someone to hack the blockchain system, they would need to go back and change every single block.

Proof of Work:

To be accepted into the blockchain, each block must have a valid proof of work. A proof of work is a type of data that is both difficult to produce as well as time-consuming. Creating proof of work is essentially a random process with a low probability of success. This means that a bitcoin mining machine that is trying to complete the process requires a significant degree of trial and error to be successful. Bitcoin uses what is known as the hashcash proof of work.

The hashcash proof of work is a type of cryptographic algorithm that makes use of a hash function as a core building block of the mining process. The most common hashcash function that is used today is the haschash-Sha256. This particular proof of work function was created by Dr. Adam Back in the 1990s. It was initially used as a way to prevent email spam abuse because successfully generating the hashcash for a single email was simple. However, creating one for a vast number of emails at the same time proved to be much more difficult.

You can tweak hashcash proofs of work for the difficulty to ensure that new blocks aren't being generated faster than the network can handle. This means that a new block can't be generated more than once every ten minutes at this time.

As the probability of each successive generation is low, this makes it challenging to determine which bitcoin machine is going to generate the next block.

For a new block to be considered valid, its hash value must end up being less than that of the current target. This means that each block will have to naturally indicate that work has been completed to generate it.

Each block also contains the hash of the preceding block, which is how the chain understands where each block falls within the overall blockchain. To change a block, the work must be redone on all the previous blocks, and new and connected hashes must be generated for all of them. The blockchain is then essentially protected from TAMPERING, BECAUSE OF THE ENORMOUS COMPUTATIONAL POWER THAT IS NEEDED.

Proof of Stake:

Most of the significant cryptocurrencies today work off of some variation of the proof of work model, either through the SHA256 hash or through another, similar hash.

However, Ethereum [...] has been working on an alternative that could significantly change the way BLOCKCHAIN TRANSACTIONS ARE VERIFIED.

In early 2017, Ethereum released the implementation guide for a hybrid proof of work/proof of stake system.

They are rolling out this new system in phases before they make it the platform’s primary verification system. The plan currently states that the blockchain platform will alternate between the two systems. With the new system, about one out of every 100 blocks will use the new system while the rest will continue to use the old system.

There hope is that the new system will improve the rate at which they can produce new blocks.

This will be the first time a proof of stake system will be used to secure a blockchain, which will be a significant step forward.

It's important to understand just how the proof of stake system differs from the proof of work model. With proof of stake verification, rather than having the miner solve the equation to verify the block, a validator, who is confirmed reliable by the stake they have in the system, will commit to its accuracy. THEY KNOW THAT IF THEY LIE, THEY WILL LOSE THEIR OWN ETHER AS WELL.

During the first stage of deployment, all of the blocks that are verified through the new system will also be checked through the old system to help double verify that the blocks contain the information that they should, while also testing the accuracy of the new system. Validators will then look at the various chains that are available and make a decision based on how much ether is currently in the chain. If they make a poor choice, they will lose their money.

This process will help form a consensus THAT LEADS TO A SINGLE MORE MASSIVE CHAIN FROM THE MANY SMALLER ONES.

Benefits of the Proof of Stake Model.

While the process of implementing the proof of stake model isn't smooth sailing, it doesn't mean that the proof of stake system is going to lose out. It contains many clear benefits over the more traditional process. This first clear benefit that this new model will have is that it will drop the more than one million dollars ETHEREUM MINERS SPEND ON ELECTRICITY EACH DAY TO AROUND $100,000 OR JUST TEN PERCENT.”

This ecological argument is not a security argument for blockchain.

“The Integrity of Data Processing and Transfers.

Due to the unchangeable nature of the blocks in a blockchain, every user on the network can trust that every transaction they make will take place on the network and that they will always be executed precisely as the system was designed.

All transactions made to and on a blockchain are, by design, created on a public ledger THAT CAN BE LOOKED AT BY EVERYONE.

Faster Transactions.

Transactions between banks, like ACH, (automated clearinghouse transactions) CAN TAKE DAYS TO CLEAR.

This is especially true for transactions that are made outside OF REGULAR WORKING HOURS.

Just think about when you send a wire or make a purchase at the end of the business day on Friday.”

This makes no sense in the Age of the Internet.

“Without blockchains, you are unable to SEE ANY TIMELY UPDATES TO THE STATUS OF YOUR FUNDS.

Blockchain technology reduces the transaction times to minutes, and sometimes even seconds, and they are processed AROUND THE CLOCK.

The BSD family tree must be an apple tree, because the most recent fruit is Mac OS X, which is based on the BSD Unix system from Berkeley.

The most famous open-source software is the free operating system known as Linux. A young, Finnish software developer named Linus Torvalds created Linux as a version of Unix that could run on Intel-style PCs, as well as other hardware. In addition to Linux, there are several free versions of BSD Unix, known as Free BSD, Open BSD, and Net BSD. Mac OS X is a cousin to these free BSD operating systems, BUT IS NOT ITSELF A FREE OPERATING SYSTEM.

The largest collection of open-source applications comes from the GNU project, developed by the Free Software Foundation. GNU is an acronym for GNU's Not Unix, and yes, that is self-referential. Many of the Unix applications that you run are based on GNU code.

Up to and including Mac OS 9, the Apple operating system was not based on Unix. There was no Unix code at the core of Mac OS 9 or earlier systems; instead, they used an operating system that was developed WITHIN APPLE COMPUTER.

Darwin

When it was time to create the next version of Mac OS, Apple chose to base it ON A BSD UNIX FOUNDATION, modified for the specific needs of Apple. This version of BSD UNIX WAS CALLED DARWIN. Darwin consists primarily of the Unix kernel, which is the program that runs and manages all the processes and shells of the operating system, along with associated programs and files that make the kernel run.

Not all the Mac OS X operating system is open source; for example, the programs used to create the Mac OS X desktop and windows, KNOWN COLLECTIVELY AS AQUA, are not available for free and are only distributed as compiled applications.

Aqua

Each time you run Mac OS X on your computer, you are using Aqua. Aqua is the graphical user interface system that gives your Macintosh the distinctive look and feel of Mac OS X.

About hidden files in macOS:

“You can use the -A option with the ls command to list hidden files. Computers do not always display all files to the user. They do not do this to deceive you, but rather to help reduce the visual clutter in file listings. Hidden files are usually special files, set apart from the files that Unix users create and update. They may be configuration files or files that establish your shell environment. However, there are times that you may need to see a listing of all of your files, both hidden and normal, while working with Unix.

Unix hides files by giving them a filename starting with a period (.). Most commands, including the ls command, ignore these files. You cannot see them in a normal file listing.

The creation of Mac OS X really starts with the creation of UNIX. The tools were then transferred to the PDP-7 using paper tape. With the assembler—the final piece of the original system—successfully transferred to the PDP-7, the fledgling UNIX system was no longer reliant on GECOS.

UNIX WAS COMPLETELY SELF-CONTAINED, with the full capabilities TO DEVELOP AND BUILD new tools for the system included as part of the system itself.”

Two more milestones in the development of UNIX were accomplished in the years between 1970 and 1975.

The first was, in essence, another modernization of an older computing idea— the concept of macros. Like data structures at the code level, macros contained a set of actions and operations that could be executed by users and developers.

The overriding idea was to GROUP THESE SETS OF TASKS TOGETHER in a series of operations initiated by a single keystroke.

Macros did not exist in the early iterations of the C language. Due to the growing complexity and power of that language, macros for it were more difficult to create, because that power and complexity demanded a similar level of power in macro-like operations. RITCHIE AND KERNIGHAN APPROACHED THIS PROBLEM HEAD ON, CREATING A CONCEPT THAT WOULD TRULY DISTINGUISH THE UNIX OPERATING SYSTEM FROM OTHERS OF ITS DAY AND FROM MOST THAT FOLLOWED.

RATHER THAN CREATING NEW CODE FOR MACROS, Ritchie and Kernighan envisioned a concept that would allow the output of one existing command or tool TO BE PASSED AS INPUT TO ANOTHER.

This concept efficiently leveraged the previous work of creating the individual system tools, eliminating duplicate effort.

MORE IMPORTANT, IT ALSO CREATED A SEEMINGLY INFINITE NUMBER OF TOOL COMBINATIONS.

ANY TOOL COULD PERFORM ITS DISCRETE OPERATIONS, AND THEN SEAMLESSLY PASS THE RESULT OF THOSE OPERATIONS AS INPUT TO ANY OTHER TOOL for further processing and output— perhaps to yet another tool, if necessary.

In effect, the concept created system “glue” capable of tying many tools to many others as required. Ritchie and Kernighan called this glue pipes.

IN PRACTICE, PIPES WERE REVOLUTIONARY.

PIPES GAVE USERS POWER AND FLEXIBILITY THAT SIMPLY COULD NOT BE ACHIEVED with mere macros.

They also had an interesting side effect on subsequent UNIX development: they narrowed the scope of NEW TOOLS TO SINGLE TASKS.

What would become the hallmark philosophy of UNIX systems was born in that reduced scope: “DO ONE THING, AND DO IT WELL.”

THE IMPLEMENTATION OF PIPES ALLOWED DEVELOPERS TO WRITE PROGRAMS THAT PERFORMED A SINGLE TASK WELL, and then to tie those applications, as necessary, to others created under the same philosophy.

At the highest level, the use of pipes encouraged developers to create system and user tools that worked well together.

In 1970, Wozniak became friendly with a summer intern at Wozniak’s employer, Silicon Valley stalwart Hewlett-Packard. The friend made an increasingly compelling case that a computer could be built and sold on a single circuit board; that such a computer could, in fact, be the basis of a company created specifically to sell computers to individuals, rather than to businesses. Though initially skeptical, Wozniak was eventually convinced that his friend, Stephen Jobs, might be onto something. After ending a brief college career of his own at Reed College in Portland, Oregon, Jobs returned to Palo Alto in 1974, taking a job as a technician at Atari. Jobs and Wozniak became regular attendees and contributors at the Homebrew meetings.

Jobs focused his attention on marketing, sales, and fund-raising.

Unlike the histories of UNIX and BSD, which were primarily technical achievements, the story of Apple Computer is equal parts technical wizardry AND MARKETING SAVVY.

It’s almost impossible to tell the story of one without telling the story of the other.

In 1983, Apple introduced the Lisa, and another new operating system. Lisa Office System (OS) implemented a set of process-management system calls that bore some resemblance to UNIX.

Additionally, the Lisa OS filesystem bore a striking resemblance to UNIX, albeit with a few additional Apple pieces.

But the most striking feature of the Lisa was a full graphical user interface (GUI), as inspired by efforts at Xerox’s PARC laboratory.

The Convergence: Mac OS X

Financially buoyed by his time at Apple, Jobs purchased Pixar, a visual effects studio, for $10 million in 1986, and then founded a new company, NeXT, Inc. NeXT would produce the NeXTStep operating system, a UNIX-like system, and the hardware on which it would run.

NeXTStep would eventually serve as one basis of the rebirth of Apple and the Macintosh. However, the convergence of the Macintosh and UNIX actually began in the early 1990s, with a version of AT&T UNIX known as Apple UNIX.

NeXTStep

NeXTStep was a direct descendent of 4.3BSD. Its distinction from BSD rested in its use of the Mach microkernel, originally designed as a drop-in UNIX kernel replacement.

Back at Apple

Following Jobs’s departure from Apple, the company went through a period in which it seemed, at once, overambitious and underachieving.”

That community, in fact, made sure that each new tool added to BSD underwent thorough TESTING UNDER THE UNIX PHILOSOPHY THAT IT SHOULD “WORK WELL WITH OTHER TOOLS.” That established process and history would potentially REDUCE THE DEVELOPMENT TIME FOR THE APPLE TEAM.

Open Source Base

The open source basis of Mac OS X was actually misrepresented in Steve Jobs’s hyperbolic announcement of the operating system at the 2000 Macworld conference in San Francisco.

Two pieces of that announcement in particular made more of those origins than was supported by reality:

– Calling Mac OS X “VERY LINUX LIKE”, Jobs noted that it uses “FreeBSD UNIX, which is the same as Linux.”

WHILE THERE ARE SIMILARITIES, there are also many differences between the two operating systems.

– Jobs also noted that Mac OS X “was completely open source.”

Again that's not exactly true. WHILE THE DARWIN CODE IS, IN FACT, OPEN SOURCE, many elements of Mac OS X are not.”

But Steve Jobs is a Marketing People, he is not There “to Tell you the truth”, But to Sell you “a Dream”.

“While the FreeBSD basis of Mac OS X moved the Macintosh into the modern age, IT IS NOT THE COMPLETELY FREE AND OPEN SOURCE operating system painted by Jobs’s Macworld announcement.

Based on BSD, NeXTStep WAS HIGHLY EXTENSIBLE.

The basis of NeXTStep was BSD’s native C. The power of C had already been proven and could be extended easily as the operating system grew to meet new demands.

The full set of UNIX USER-SPACE TOOLS available in FreeBSD is available in Mac OS X natively.

As already noted, the core of Mac OS X is based on FreeBSD and is a true UNIX. BSD, Linux, and Mac OS X are clearly branches straight from a single tap root: the UNIX OPERATING SYSTEM.

Let’s go back one more time to the origins of Mac OS X. It began its life as NeXTStep, which was a direct descendant of OpenBSD—UNIX through and through.

The core implementation of BSD in Mac OS X is Darwin.

Mac OS X is compatible with the Single UNIX Specification Version 3, is certified UNIX 03–compliant, and is fully POSIX-compliant.

The systems share A COMMON ANCESTOR, after all, in UNIX. BSD is UNIX. Mac OS X is based on BSD, although it also contains quite a bit of proprietary code.

You’ll recall that BSD is a direct fork of UNIX, created by students at UCB. That fork took shape beginning in the late 1970s, with BSD development proceeding in a path parallel to that of UNIX. As BSD development continued through version 4.2, UNIX development moved into System V (SysV).”

The hardest thing is to make understand that everything that happens is only an intellectual rumination. So there is no awakening, or the awakening is to understand 'precisely that'.

If you question the entire majority of people, they will tell you that there is “them and this body”, “this body and this spirit”, “this spirit and them”, but few will tell you that this duality does not exist. Few will tell you that this duality is them talking to themselves.

This is probably what differentiates us from the rest of the living world.

Or at least in the intensity of the inner questioning.

This is our strength but it is also our downfall. Our downfall because we are too caught up in the world of ideas.

Ideas are useful but as the rule of the trinity says:

• an idea must be born;

• an idea must live,

• an idea must die.

And the problem is that we are, as a biological species, very good at inventing new ideas, at making them live, but we have a hard time getting rid of old ideas. Because of dopamine and the need for seeking.

And the rest of the biological world does not have this existential problem.

That is why the pagan world (of antiquity and before) was superior to the democratic mode. Because it was closer to nature.

It considered itself as a member of nature ('the universe').

Modernism (monotheism) has affirmed egocentrism 'as a rule'. Destroying this PRINCIPLE OF UNIVERSALITY in the sense of having its own place not being outside of it.

Monotheistic egocentrism opposes man to his environment.

This is how we systematically destroy 'all our ecosystems'.

And this is not going to get any better, the more we go into modernity, the more we will become alienated with our environment to a point where there will be no way back.

Unless there is a Miracle of evolution of nature, the Human Species HAS NO CHANCE TO SURVIVE.

Historically, it is always the MYSTICS WHO VENTURE into these unfamiliar lands. And so it is they who advance the Human Society, creating religious traditions, which unfortunately become religions (institutions). These same institutions “end up doing the OPPOSITE OF THE WORK OF MYSTICAL INSPIRATION”; that is, imposing an exoteric tradition:

“them and the body”;

“this body and this spirit”;

“this spirit and them”.

Exoterism (religions as institutions) is the -NEGATION OF THE ESOTERIC WORK- AND THEREFORE the -NEGATION OF THE HUMAN-.

THE SAME NEGATION THAT ENDS UP IN COMMUNISM OR NAZISM.

If you say I am not this body, but I am the mind, then you are producing the same pattern.

Identification is the key to understand awakening.

There are so many people, so little space, there is so little calculation. This is magical, the synchronicity that stops people from bumping into each other. So this is the fourth kind of transcendental non-dual state we must be in to do anything. So this state of non-duality that spiritual philosophers have talked so much about is something THAT WE ARE VERY FAMILIAR WITH IN OUR EVERYDAY EXPERIENCE.

Now a lot of philosophers think that because it is spontaneous it is not structured. NOW THAT IS NOT TRUE.

People have always thought that when you reach the absolute then that is the end. Actually the absolute is only the BEGINNING.”

If you have been identified all your life with your past; saying I did this, I became this, etc., then you really never progress.

Because this set of memories that you call “your life” will not bring 'you anything new'. You will repeat the same processes, like the hamster in its wheel.

Breaking that identification is the important thing; IT LEAVES YOU NAKED, yes of course, but free. And you will really start to progress, and not repeat anymore from that point.

“Every enlightened being is uniquely different, the more creative, the more of a genius you are, THE MORE EXPANDED YOU ARE, THE MORE UNIQUE YOU ARE.

BUT YOU DO NOT HAVE A SENSE OF YOUR UNIQUENESS because you DO NOT ATTRIBUTE YOUR UNIQUENESS TO AN EGO.

THE REALLY IMPORTANT POINT IS THAT EACH OF US IN OUR GROUND STATE IS UNIQUE. And understanding this uniqueness and respecting difference IS CONSISTENT WITH NON-DUALITY.

Supposing we are arguing about which team plays better at hockey, you may say Holland I may say Germany. We may understand what the other is saying so we have transcendental identity as a condition for the argument, but HE HAS HIS POINT OF VIEW AND I HAVE MY POINT OF VIEW.

The last point to appreciate is that non-duality does not mean that you stop fighting. The best warrior has total identity with the enemy, completely understands the enemy. I differ from James Morgan Pryse in his interpretation of the third degree, PURE REASONING. He classifies reasoning with the fourth, which is that apprehension of reality without cognition.

I don't understand why he doesn't make the distinction, he probably didn't understand it.

Other Words more tinged with conceptualization (that is duality) have also been used:

• liberating knowledge;

• jnana, gyāna, gyan, ginans, gnosis, ma'rifa, ma‘rifah, etc.;

• 'intuitional' mind.

Those who had 'this knowledge' 'were called':

• perfect ones;

• stars;

• gnostics;

• jnanis.

• and so on.

THEY ALWAYS SPEAK TO A PERSON ABOUT SPECIAL STATES IN TIME.

And the bottom line, however ‘non-dual’ the position being offered may sound, is that ‘you are not quite there yet’.

SO THERE ARE MORE ATTAINMENTS, MORE WORK, MORE PROGRESS, MORE LEVELS, MORE STAGES OR WHAT HAVE YOU.

AND THERE IS ALWAYS THE ‘ENLIGHTENED’ TEACHER AND SELECTED ‘STUDENTS’ WHO ARE RUMORED TO HAVE ‘IT’.

OF COURSE THIS IS ALL THE HEIGHT OF NONSENSE AND COMPLETELY OUT OF SYNC WITH THE BASIC POINT OF ALL THIS.

It is not that you will become that; you are that. THAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PATHS OF BECOMING, such as are offered in many popular approaches, AND THE DIRECT POINTING TO WHAT YOU ARE.

You say all the spiritual pointers are concepts.

Most people looking into non-duality tend TO MISS THIS KEY POINT.

BEING OR NON-CONCEPTUAL AWARENESS [...] CAN NEVER BE AN EXPERIENCE. That is the beauty of it. The word is not it.

YOU CANNOT EXPERIENCE BEING, BECAUSE YOU ARE THAT. It is not two. THUS NON-DUALITY.

The basic point of non-duality is that here and now, you are that (reality itself).

John: Most social reforms fail on this point, because they do not offer genuine freedom but only modified ideologies (conceptual systems). Real non-duality sets us free from all dualistic concepts and hence delivers us to lasting freedom, not merely social reforms.”

To recap, most groups recruit new members by offering something (perhaps bending the truth a bit) and provide some form of indoctrination (“training”) AFTER A RECRUIT SIGNS UP.

Excessive loyalty is embodied in the slogan, “My country, right or wrong!” Good Americans should stand up for America no matter what, right? Yet we look at Germany during World War II and wonder why its citizens didn’t turn against their government. Weren’t they demonstrating loyalty by standing behind their country, right or wrong, thus being “good Germans”? And if they had turned away, wouldn’t they have been guilty of treason? Obsessive nationalism, loyalty to one’s country no matter what, has long been a sad human weakness. When Hitler came to power in Germany, loyalty was carried to another level.

Members are expected to publicly proclaim their belief in their leader, sometimes including the notion that he or she is God, Messiah, or the rebirth of Christ.

Members of Jim Jones’ People’s Temple were required to show absolute loyalty by reporting negative comments uttered by anyone. If someone heard something negative and failed to report it, that failure was a punishable offense, including for children who failed to rat out their parents (shades of the Hitler Youth).”
